A guide at the top of the chain-ring, and a tensioner at the bottom, ensure the chain does not rattle off the chain-ring. The guide sits close to the top of the chain-ring, which stops the chain jumping or falling off to either side. The tensioner stops the chain moving away from the chain-ring at the bottom and also puts tension on the chain, taking out some of the slack that leads to the chain falling off in the first place. Plastic bash-guards are also commonplace on bikes with a chain device, and these simply attach to the chain-ring, sitting slightly proud around its circumference and ensuring that rocks and other objects cannot bend or damage the chain-ring.

Eye Protection Any conditions when out mountain biking can call for eye protection for a number of preventative reasons: to keep mud, rain, sticks, stones, dust and more out of your eyes; to counteract the effects of sunlight through tinted lenses; and to limit the airflow to your eyes, which can make your eyes water.
